For many years, I struggled to understand what it means to be a man and how to know when one becomes a man. Some say it is a certain age, others say it is losing virginity, but I don't think becoming a man is defined by either. Historically in almost every culture there was a right of passage into manhood for young men established by their family and their community. You may have noticed in modern times that communities are dwindling, population of broken families are increasing, and older males are still in their adolescence. I discovered by surrendering my life (my pride, my will, and my pain) to do the will of a loving God (put others needs before my own and live honorably for God not for me) my security in my identity as a man is transformed and solidified. When I focus on my needs, my fears, and my resentments I revert back to my childhood tendencies of throwing tantrums and demanding to be nurtured. If you want to experience what it means to be a man you need to set aside selfishness, practice serving others, and live for something bigger than you that can strengthen you, empower you, and build your esteem. For some that something "bigger" is their country, the military, and their community or associations, but for me it is God.
