There's a lot of various BS that can be defunded without any loss of NECESSARY government services.
PBS is just one of them.

Evidently the people running PBS didn't actually watch the 1st debate. Here's EXACTLY what Romney said, "“I’m sorry Jim, I’m gonna stop the subsidy to PBS,” Romney told debate moderator Jim Lehrer, who is executive editor for PBS NewsHour. “I like PBS. I love Big Bird. I actually like you, too. But I’m not gonna keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for it.”
I seriously doubt PBS would fail if taxpayer funding ended. If so, lake someone else said here, "bye bye birdy!"
