Modern archaeologists have a love/hate relationship with Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890). On one hand, his discovery of Homer's city of Troy was the most incredible find since the Rosetta Stone and generated great interest in archaeology. On the other hand, his reckless and destructive excavation techniques destroyed as much as he discovered. Regardless, finding a once-mythical city that has haunted the collective memory of Western civilization for 3000 years should count for something.
