I am leaning towards an iphone next, most of the family is already there. What I really need is the best turn by turn directions. Am thinking of ditching my GPS in favor of the phone. I welcome comments.

I would get/stick with a Galaxy phone. In my opinion they are the best Android phone on the market. I have the original Galaxy S and it's still working great after almost 2 years. Google maps is great on it and I can only imagine it's better on the S3.
I would be leery of Apple's new map app, it's probably good but still not as smooth and clean as Google. It's up to you in the end what you get, but as for me I don't see myself getting an iPhone any time soon.

@tinman - I have had a Galaxy phone for over a year now and could not be happier. My previous phone was an iPhone and I was never particularly happy with it. I agree with Daniel's comment about Google Maps. While I don't use it as my primary nav, it has never failed me when I needed it. Also, for me at least, I have yet to run into an app that I needed/wanted that is only available for iPhone. In the end, I think they are both good choices so you can't go wrong either way.
