Ok, I know we're not supposed to use powders outside the manufacturer's stated "comfort zone" but some forum reading lead me to believe that I needed to test Winchester Super Target (WST) powder out in calibers not listed in the manual. I found that this stuff is absolutely awesome for Cowboy Action Shooting in both .357 and .44-40 and with loads that give a satisfying BANG but doesn't punish you with recoil. Part of the secret is that WST, at least in lighter competition loads, gives a nice, soft backward push instead of a harsh bucking effect. It feels more like black powder than the harsh recoil pulse I used to get from Clays. And it smells great! I even found it worked well in my 9mm hand loads (4.1 gr) but I wanted to save it for Cowboy shooting. I take it this is the powder Win uses in their AA shotgun shells but it shouldn't be wasted only in shotguns!.
