It is not that the pirates, in the story, are giving away waffles but in the file-share analogy the author uses but that the pirates are taking the "waffles" the other people are making and giving it away. They buy the waffle once and replicate it and give it away. But the other part of business failure is true. They put out crap over and over again and expect everyone to put down their hard earned money to buy it like it was gold. Gold-colored crap is still CRAP.
