I disagree with the designation of the mission as a "suicide mission". Although more extreme, it'd be like saying the pilgrims went on a suicide mission to the US.
They're still supposed to live full lives, just not on the Earth.
I agree with both of you. It's a shame that Obama killed NASA, but it's also good opportunity for the private sector to step up.
We really need to be looking for new places to set up shop. At 7 Billion people currently, Earth is going to be hitting it's carrying capacity (K) in a very short time (~400-500 years, maybe?) I would really love to see the level of enthusiasm for space exploration to reach that of the time of the race for the moon.
