I was under the impression that this website was about creating conversation. If you are offended, or only care about your side of the conversation, then don't read my stuff. If you actually care about real contribution to society, feel free to contribute in a constructive manner.
Eh, it's mostly false connections. Obama is of course cheering the economy, he's the incumbent. Were tables turned, Obama would be insinuating that Romney's policies had failed America and it's economy, with Romney championing it's slow but successful ascent out of the low point of three years ago.
Half the points aren't relevant. Gas prices, for example, tend to increase when the economy is doing better. Gas prices were above $4/gal, then dropped to that nice (and a bit low-balled) $1.85 at the bottom of the crash.
Other points are Obama's talking points - that too much wealth is concentrated at the top, that child poverty is expanding, and that too many American's are slipping below the poverty line. I believe when he proposes solutions, he is called a socialist (cause it's a spooky word.)
And China has a big economy! Well, truthfully, that's the least surprising thing ever. We're quite lucky that China fell to communism and the "Great Leap Forward" (sic), because the fact is a nation with a population some 5 times larger than ours should have an economy larger than ours. The fact that the government maintains totalitarian control over the people while liberalizing the economy means they can shut up organizers, environmental activists, and others who do good things but whose actions prevent the unhindered expansion of business.
Finally, be careful with that gold. Don't forget what happened in 1980, where the price of gold fell from over $800 to below $300 in the space of a few years. It stayed there until somewhere ~2005, when it began it's current rise.
Dirt doc, I hear what you are saying, and I agree with most of what you say. The title is a wee bit misleading, I actually dont blame Obama for all of this. I blame our government. I find them all repugnant, both the right and the left. As for Obama, he has his own issues he has caused, yet I am still very amazed that he continues to blame Bush and everybody else for the issues of today. That doesn't even bring in to play the fact that he hasn't followed through on his campaign promises, until lately when it can potentially win the election for him. I do realize that politicians by nature are devious, i'm not ignorant. Plus, thanks for a your insight.
Yeah, you said you wanted conversation. If we as the community on gentlemint are going to be accepting of political material, I think it's important we actually discuss those things in a calm and reasoned way (since this is gentlemint, I suppose we could call that a gentlemanly manner), which is sorely missing from the current political climate. I decided a little while ago that to do otherwise is to turn the site into a place where we too can come to yell and obstinately not consider the view points of others. There's enough of that. If any of us (myself included) post political material, I think we should encourage and welcome well-reasoned and calm comments from supporters and detractors. But neither group, in any political mint, should put up with the red-faced outrage that spills out from both sides of the aisle.
Well stated dirt doc. I feel the same. For 8 years I owned and operated a coffee shop where I encouraged and tried to duplicate the penny universities of old. We had great conversations on religion, politics, education, really on anything controversial. At times things would get heated, but it was always civil, and most importantly we remained friends. At the very least we put up with each other and kept coming back for more. We even hosted debate parties and campaign Parties for any that would join. But the ground rules of treating people with respect must be set at the start.
