Be a real man. Buy the ring for her yourself. Earn her trust and prove you don't need your hand held to do something right. With me here Gentlemen?

Absolutely agreed. I had various conversations with my wife before we were married where I gleaned information without her knowledge. I also solicited her best friend's assistance. Your future wife usually doesn't find it suspicious if her friend talks to her about rings. I also gave her one of my rings (this might not work with some women) and used that to gauge her size.

Joseph, way to be a classy Gentleman.
I too worked hard to figure out the best fit for my wife. Getting her size. Asking friends what she likes. I even went to the extent of taking a room mate of mine out with me as he worked as a ring salesman at a point in his life. After talking to men and women about my options, her personality, and the style that would fit her, I can proudly say I picked the perfect ring. 5 years running now, and a great relationship still intact.

Thanks Matt. I have to say, if I hadn't worked so hard and been so devious I would have failed miserably. My wife likes yellow gold, not white, and she thinks diamonds are boring. Two years later she still wears it every day.
