I tried to do this with brooks brothers pants last summer. I've got pretty long legs and wanted a 12" inseam. (this is something I've only been able to find with Bills Khaki's "Long Shorts" which have since been discontinued. Long story short, they cropped the pants, and you could really tell they used to be pants, just way way too narrow and constrictive around the knee.
