Eh. There's never any sense in comparing a pre-digital sales to a post-digital sales record. Especially since singles now are a 99 cent download of a single song, where they used to be EPs. I don't even think sales from the vinyl age to the cassette age makes a lot of sense.
Also, every one of these articles can't help but sound like "my parents were wrong when they said my music was terrible, but i'm totally right now that I say it about the next younger generation's music."

AFAIK Led Zeppelin didn't even want to release any singles, so no wonder they didn't have a number one single.
