Sometimes we feel like "this is how our dad raised us" so we just emulate that, for better or worse.
Or maybe the author just caught this guy having a bad day. Sometimes shit hits the fan and your kid can just irk your nerves. We can't be perfect parents all the time, the author has to know that. And if he's claiming to be perfect then he's an asshole.

Having a 'bad day' is no excuse for being an ass hole of a dad. Period. Perfect? No. Never. But not a total moron/jerk either.

Great advice. We all can do better as parents. And I agree, a bad day is never - NEVER! - an excuse to mistreat a child. "Son, I've had a bad day, and I can't control myself, so I'll take it out on you by...but I don't want you to do that."
