Our local library in Lawrence is an amazing place. Free knowledge, a beautiful, spacious building, and it even has a legit recording studio for anyone in the community to use.
But the library does a lot more than just house information: they also provide a lot of programs for kids like free lunches in the summer, among other things. I think many libraries have really evolved over the years on their own to fill needs in the community instead of just books.
Amazon (or any other for-profit organization) can't do that, nor should they. I'm happy to pay for this service with my taxes.
