We had 5 cities in Texas that banned plastic bags. Just two weeks ago the Supreme court of Texas ruled the ban was illegal and the cities were told they could not ban plastic bags. There is hope but you have to fight.

I remember paper straws when I was a kid. They get soggy and stop working, usually before the end of what you're drinking.

Just coat the inside of the paper straw in mercury, this will retard the sogginess factor rendering paper straws completely effective and violà: plastic straw problem completely solved AND we have saved the earth... Huzzah!

Asbestos. It's all asbestos these days. It will give structural integrity to the straw. And yeah, like you said, it will also deal with the planet's parasite problem.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I am just being sardonic here. Humans are not a parasite on this planet. And NEVER drink from an asbestos-lined straw. Well, asbestos lined anything really.
