My family first heard this story visiting the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site in SD this summer. Thank you Stanislav Petrov for having the wisdom to know in a crisis situation, "When people start a war, they don’t start it with only five missiles."

"at one point he had been reduced to growing potatoes to feed himself". I understand that the idea of growing potatoes may be terrifying for a journalist born in New York, but he could do some digging (no pun intended). It's normal for Slavic people to grow their own food.

I was also confused by that comment. Lots of people in the US are "reduced" to growing their own food, but in the Midwest, we call it "gardening" and "farming."
