As a long distance backpacker, I cannot remember ONE time I saw a tin can just laying around

Heh, this is a great point.
I've done some hiking in Mexico, and sadly there were many tin cans along the trail.

I didnt see any along the Appalachian. Maybe i was just lucky. I did carry out a couple of bottles though. They were close to a road
