I read a book a few years back by James Bradley (Flags of Our Fathers) called 'The Imperial Cruise'. Bradley was able to paint Teddy in a very different light from what we are used to. Bradley claimed, through existing memoirs, journals, diaries and records that Teddy was a p***y. It was all for show. He staged things for the camera to make himself look like a mighty frontiersman and hunter and outdoorsman. Bradley says it's all a farce. I took the info with a grain of salt because he seemed hell-bent on slamming the guy as if there was some sort of personal beef. Not really sure.
I'd recommend the book. Great history lessons about things than never get covered in school.
