perhaps it was an attempt to show a bit of equality with the Afghan armed forces who are required to turn in their weapons during similar meetings. But it made me raise my eyebrows when I hear it too.
I don't doubt he was afraid of his own troops...some of them have had several deployments lost homes,friends and families all to perpetuate a sham started over 10 years ago.

that was the after-the-fact justification given, which i ain't buying, but even if that were the motivation, it would still be way wrong.
i saw a shot of panetta exiting the plane on arrival, and i swear you could almost hear his knees knocking and smell his fear.

So now we have to be Politically "Correct" and provide Equality during a war...a dumb plan and an even dumber "excuse"
