I remember the "stein" and will accept no explanation for its current iteration. This has frustrated me to no end and I am still no closer to any type of conclusion. I read all of these books and would certainly remember if it was "stain" because a bear stain would have tickled my young sense of humor. I was under the impression that they were a nice Jewish family.

Oh...and chartreuse is a dark red burgundy color. It always has been not matter what anyone says.

Hmm, see chartreuse has always been a yellow-green to me. We must have crossed over from different universes then.

Yes, this is maddening. I remember seeing the books a few years back and seeing the "stain" was bewildering to me. It HAD to have been -stein....
