Today (Oct 21) marks the 50th anniversary of a disaster that befell a small mining town in the valleys of South Wales. 116 children killed when a coal tip gave way and crashed into the village school, basically wiping out a generation. This is a harrowing read, the accounts of the parents who waved their kids off to their school day, never to see them again, particularly harrowing. Being from S.Wales, the name 'Aberfan' was always whispered with reverence. Reading this full account not only of the event itself but the aftermath helps me understand why that reverence still holds.
