Glen. This is a masterpiece! Stopped me dead in my workday. Lots to pick thru and ponder (should be over a glass of whisky, but hey, that seems to be frowned up these days in the workplace). One note. There are many types of Scotch, denoted by region (Islay, Highland, Speyside, Lowland) and these have distinctive notes, whether it be peat, heather, honey. Peaty or smoky single malts mostly come out of Islay. I personally find an Islay single malt overpowering with the peaty (or smoky) notes. In a blended whisky I find that they really lift the drink and make it very palatable. All down to personal taste. Thanks again for taking on this endeavor. Will spend hours poring over this and refining my appreciation for the amber stuff.

You make some excellent notes there. Scotch is incredibly nuanced, and also the most restrictive in regards to how Scotland legally defines "Scotch". I didn't include much about the different regions, but I certainly could, and probably will in the near future. Great suggestion.
I'm more of a bourbon guy, but that's mostly because of it's locality.
I've got nothing against a good blended whisky with a lower ABV, and in fact I'd much rather prefer it. I find myself watering down single malts as it is anyway... it's hard to taste it when the alcohol proof is so high.

My bourbon exposure is slight, really not beyond Makers Mark, despite my brothers best efforts. Water is a good friend to scotch. Amazing how a drop of water can change the complexion & enjoyment level of any whisky. You are providing an invaluable resourc here. Don't know if there is a Nobel prize for contributions to understanding of scotch, but would imagine you'd be high on any list. Carry on drinking sir!!
