This is a short film that brings up some interesting points about the soundtracks to modern movies.

There are a lot of things I really didn't know about soundtracks in here. The whole thing about temp music is pretty insane. It's no wonder all the marvel movies have a similar vibe.

I enjoyed this immensely. It is a very thorough look into the process for such a short piece.

It also reminded me of what has become of the music industry as a whole. The formulated crap that is being shoved down people's throats these days is unforgivable (I'm looking at you Nashville bro country). And now it is finding its way into films.

This quote from the film above sums it up nicely:

“Part of the frustration is that filmmakers just reuse things that worked in every other movie. So you end up with the lowest common denominator.”

I can actually identify with the whole thing about the temp music. Human beings like familiar things that they recognize. Once someone becomes familiar with a piece of music associated with a scene it would be almost impossible to convince them that another piece of music would be better. As someone who has done a lot of web design, it can be really frustrating when someone says "can you make it look more like this?" and then pulls up a website that they frequent. The score should be left to the composers and I'm guessing a lot of directors become composers in their own minds when they start copying and pasting music into scenes.

This was very well done. I remember thinking this about the Iron Man movies (he's been my favorite super hero since I was nine) back when the first film debuted. There is no tune to associate with Iron Man. Indiana Jones, James Bond, Peter Gunn all have great tunes, and then we have themes for Star Trek/Wars...and so on. It's a shame they didn't put more effort into it.
