It seems that the application of this law would include churches simply for being "open to the public" under public accommodation laws - whether or not they receive public funds. Something by the way is actually pretty rare, receiving public funds.
But if I wanted to find a group in this equation always seeming to "cry persecution" as you put it, you don't have to look too far.
but that's what makes this law so dangerous, an environment of litigious minded, faux persecuted gays that are looking to attack Christians and make a quick buck.
"2. This section shall not apply to: a. Any bona fide religious institution with respect to any qualifications the institution may impose based on religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity when such qualifications are related to a bona fide religious purpose."
In regards to housing:
"216.12 EXCEPTIONS. 1. The provisions of sections 216.8 and 216.8A shall not apply to: a. Any bona fide religious institution with respect to any qualifications it may impose based on religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity, when the qualifications are related to a bona fide religious purpose unless the religious institution owns or operates property for a commercial purpose or membership in the religion is restricted on account of race, color, or national origin."
So churches need not fear. They can still preach against homosexuals and transgendered people and will not have to comply with any restrictions or accommodations in their restrooms.
Clearly Iowa's own interpretation of that law, 216.12, the exceptions WOULD NOT apply if those church services are open to the public. Hence the lawsuit.
I wonder if this also applies to mosques that receive federal funds and provide a service to the public. Ah, the wonderful inclusive tyranny of political correctness.
Not trying to be a jerk but am honestly wondering what services any mosque provides to the public. I'm not aware of any soup kitchens, hospitals, homes for the indigent, YMMA etc. that are associated w/ a mosque.
Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any either. This was more a hypothetical musing on the equal application of trans policy. I don't mind the question at all as this is one of the only online forms I've seen on which quality discussions/disagreements take place.

That won't withstand a court challenge.

you'd think so but, in today's world... who knows.

The separation of church and state was intended to protect the church. The state has forgotten that.

The government and church separated in one direction, not the other. BTW, the "separation of church and state" is nowhere in the Constitution.

*The govt wants the church separated

Did everyone miss these phrases?
" that receive government funds"
"offers goods and services for a price"
I see a lot of hyperbole and fear mongering and very little substance, but this seems to be typical from a group that is always crying persecution.

That's actually not clear in the wording of this law.

That is a pamphlet that was printed.
This is the actual law.
Regarding Accommodations and Services:
"2. This section shall not apply to:
a. Any bona fide religious institution with respect to any qualifications the institution may impose based on religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity when such qualifications are related to a bona fide religious purpose."
In regards to housing:
"216.12 EXCEPTIONS.
1. The provisions of sections 216.8 and 216.8A shall not apply to:
a. Any bona fide religious institution with respect to any qualifications it may impose based on religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity, when the qualifications are related to a bona fide religious purpose unless the religious institution owns or operates property for a commercial purpose or membership in the
religion is restricted on account of race, color, or national origin."

The lawsuit itself is based on the fact that Iowa is interpreting/appying the law based on that hand out... see this ABC story http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/church-sues-iowa-stop-application-transgender-rules-40357882">http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/church-sues-iowa-stop-application-transgender-rules-40357882
So sorry, they didn't just create this lawsuit out of thin air.
If Iowa intends to keep religious exceptions then the law must be made clearer.
