This is a genre of music that has never appealed to me. From the sound to the lyrics (when they are recognizable), nothing in it speaks to me, but rather repulses me. I just hear a lot of noise, anger and chaos.
Thank you for that link. I will definitely check it out. I am sure it will answer some of the questions that I have about it and the people that enjoy it. I think it perhaps taps into something I am either missing or have not experienced in my life.

It's certainly not for everyone. I am a long-time headbanger but I agree with you in that some of the heavier dark stuff is unappealing.
There is a great documentary created by an anthropologist if you are ever interested in diving deep into metal's history and various sub-genres.
