Having lived for 3 years in southern Japan (and visiting all over), I can attest to the spirit of the Japanese culture in this area. When it was time to come home, our family was not looking forward to loss of sense of community and communal responsibility in society. There are so many things Japanese just get right. We miss it.

“[Japanese] kids learn early on that, ideally, any member of the community can be called on to serve or help others,”
This is powerful and makes me reconsider my own city and country that I call home. I cannot say the same for both.
