Mastery is a very important virtue that I think kids need. I see a lot of these anti-technology posts here, on Facebook, and elsewhere, but none of them ever do more than cry about how tech is supposedly ruining kids. However our world is ruled by technology, and it always has been. The wheel was a technology. The boat was technology. The car was technology. All of these technological leaps, even something so simple as fire, have required mankind to learn new things and improve their mastery. Kids today will not thrive in society unless they know how to use computers and smart phones and other such devices. This little post you linked cries about how kids supposedly only play outside when their parents come up with an activity... That is a parents job. You "parent". Kids need guidance indoors and out in order to properly be prepared for the world of grownups. I am on a computer now. I love video games and new tech gadgets. However I spent last week in a tent in the mountains doing mountain things. I learned computers on my own, but was taught by my parents to love things outside. Outside is ugly, dirty and generally smells like sweat. Few kids are going to love it, some do.
All this to say... Don't cry about kids using technology, they have to in order to keep advancing our world. Cry instead about parents not parenting. Worry about the alarming rate at which the family unit is being destroyed. Worry about parents who refuse to use technology themselves handicapping their child's development.
You are right to an extent. Yes, parents have a huge part in it. Me being a step dad is even harder on raising kids that are not mine. However, technology was around for me, like Atari and such. Still, my friends and I chose to play outside and play real sports instead of playing the latest on Atari. I also coach youth soccer and most of the kids at age 14, boys and girls, have similar behavior.
