I disagree with the "grilled burgers are never good" comment but I would also be willing to give the ol' cast iron skillet method a try.

I seem to have mixed results in the cast iron pan. That said, I also get mixed results on the grill...

I've almost moved to the theory that everything tastes better in a cast iron skillet. The biggest arguement against this is that you dont get the smoky flavor from charcoal or wood. Well by doing this on the grill with the cast iron, you fix that issue

I will sometimes use various sized cast iron skillets on the grill when I have a variety of items. I'm a fan of vegetables with my steak and they cook well on a grill in CI. Haven't tried it with a burger but I will.

I need to try this on my wood grill over oak.

I do my steaks with cast iron skillet on the grill too: cook for a couple minutes on each side in a buttered, hot cast iron pan, and then move off the coals to finish cooking (unless you like it reeeeeally rare).
But yeah, burgers, fajitas, steaks, veggies--a lot of it does better with a cast iron skillet on the grill.

Also, this picture makes me very hungry for an In-N-Out burger. Wonder if it's just me.
