He only shoots the sparrows, starlings and pigeons which are all pest birds. It does show him viewing others, such as swallows, a mourning dove and a squirrel, but he does not shoot them.
Sparrows are the worst. At our last house, we had purple martins that would return every year to nest in the houses we provided for them. The sparrows would invade the nests and kill the babies. I started trying to shoot the sparrows but they caught on and would fly away every time the saw me. So I bought a live trap and successfully removed most of them. The martins thrived after that.
