The other benefit is actually the lack of steel reinforcement. Adding steel rebar makes concrete very strong, but as the steel rusts it expands, and concrete is very strong when compressed, but weak under tension, so it crumbles.
This is one of my favorite buildings in Rome and I spent a great deal of time here during my last trip. While fairly nondescript on the exterior, the interior is a marvel. The way the sun shines through the oculus and moves around the room is spectacular. Although I have not witnessed it in person, I have friends who have told me that the rain falling through the dome is magical to watch as well.
