I agree with the mattress, towels, and hand tools. I'd recommend cast iron for cooking (personal preference and it's adaptability) so that you can learn on it before you have to use it to impress anyone. Plus it will last decades, can be used in ovens, on open fires and even in grills, and it only improves with use. I'd add to the list: solidifying the basics of a gun collection AND a quality safe before getting married (at least your basic three).
