Interesting read, especially since I grew up in the era that most of the classic rock songs come from. I think there is a viable case to create other classic genres instead of lumping everything into rock. For example, alternative, new wave, punk, pop, etc. That might help clear things up.
But I ado agree with you that Green Day is not classic rock. If anything, it belongs in the classic pop or alternative category.

I suppose it depends on whether you classify "classic rock" by popularity or by style. The article does get into it, but Nirvana and Green Day clearly come from alternative rock. Radio stations gotta make money, but you can figure out a song's roots.
