What that quote would be calling for is a country based on the values of "collective salvation" and no, I do not want that. I want a country where we gladly help our friends and neighbors directly, not through the government coffers of wealth redistribution.

I always thought that Christian values were about helping the poor yourself rather than compelling others to do so.

Nope, but I understand how you made the mistake. What you are describing is right wing hatey hate anti government intolerance. True christian values means voting for someone who will confiscate from people you don't like and give it to people you can't be bothered to help in person, in exchange for their vote, making them helpless prisoners of the state in perpetuity.
