The sternmen of lobster boats give these lobster trap tags as tokens of love and affection. One worn as a bracelet represents the triumph of love over commerce since lobstermen only receive a set number of tags per season. You see them on wrists up and down the coast of maine in summer, on both boys and girls, lest we forget that you don’t have to be a man to be a sternman. They are said to bring luck in both lobsters and love for the season.
