I like the idea, but it seems to me the dropping of the secret compartment would be interfered with by the wall behind.

No, it doesn't. I've seen these in person, and the bottom is hinged. It only opens as far as you see in the pictures. Really a neat idea! I would love to have one in our house, but they are a bit out of the "home decor" budget currently.
