You haven't truly accomplished a survival weekend without relying on these lovely little kits.
"Each Meal Kit Supply MRE includes an entrée and side dish, bread or cracker and spread (jam or jelly), dessert, beverage mixes, condiments, and spoon. The average food energy per kit is 1,345 calories; Meal Kit Supply’s MREs have the highest calorie count commercially available."
It's that 1345 caloric count that helps you get through gruelling winter camping sessions, as the body requires more calories when exposed to colder weather.
Only downside to MRE's.... They can be rather harsh for the stomach of a lactose-intolerant individual.

I had a buddy that joined the reserves in high school, that not so affectionately referred to these as 'The Three Lies'. It's not a meal, It's not ready, and It's not edible. That was 20ish years ago, so maybe they have gotten better?

Yup, three lies in one. Maybe they are better.

I would eat a Mountain House over an MRE any day of the week.

AFAIK - MRE's are the evolution of the original IMPs (Individualized Meal Packages) which were nothing short of nasty. MRE's now, at least the ones I've gotten my hands on are pretty good. They're definitely meals and they are definitely ready-to-eat in most cases, as they don't require "cooking" necessarily - though, cooking them does help.
I put cooking in quotations because you really only need to toss them in boiling water to get them warm.

MREs aren't terrible...UGRs, however (Unitized Group Rations...Think MRE but for large groups of soldiers) are so much worse...first time having them here in Afghanistan...Like Alpo, but worse
