I am very fond of these hand carved jewelry boxes from China - they were very exotic in their day and camphorwood was popular as it repels insects and has a lovely smell. After over 40 years this one still has its natural fragrance.
This is the largest box or small chest I have listed. The workmanship is rustic and detailed - every bit is carved. A thick layer of lacquer over the carving gives it a rustic look and feel.
The lid has a village scene in which two people are talking. The buildings and gardens sit behind and around them.
The box is big: 12" (30cm) long X 7 1/4" (18cm) wide and 7 1/2" (19cm) high.
It is in excellent vintage condition. No lining inside and the brass latch and hinges works well.
