That troublesome Ruger M77 has now been replaced with this FNH model. It's the same thing, same caliber, but I expect this one to work. I had been looking at the Remington 700 and the Remington VTR but when I saw this FNH on the wall under the VTR I knew this was the one. Odd, I didn't even know FNH made a bolt model.

JakeLongeran, is that FN's scout style rifle? Sorry you had trouble with your Ruger. I have a Ruger Gunsite scout which is essentially a M77, and I love mine.

Yes, it is more scout/patrol oriented than the .308 version; they are too heavy and the barrel is too long. I believe the term "patrol" is what they use at the website for this and they only offer a 20" barrel.

The Ruger was a stainless with All-Weather stock that I bought in '91. Never used it but when I did, it immediately had to go back to New Hampshire for a new bolt. Got it back and used it during scorching heat wave last September and the firing pin froze up again. I have a feeling this was caused by galling/swelling in the heat with old metallurgy. The rifle shot well, when it worked, and was lightweight. I'll pay a slight extra weight penalty to get a rifle that works every time. One of my Ruger New Vaquero SASS set had to go back, too, so I'm getting a bad feeling about buying Ruger.

You might want to watch Nutnfancy's video review of the .308. Everything applies but the extractor, the removable magazine (which may eliminate it as a scout rifle by Jeff Cooper's definition) and weight/barrel length. I'd love to try that Gunsite Scout but my rebuilt shoulder can't take 30 cal.
