I'd never even considered doing this - other (terrible) options from my own imagination featured painters tape & holding a mirror at a funny angle in my off hand.
This is much better - sometimes you need a little of that jarhead logic!

I've always held my own hand on the hair line and shaved from there

I'm not sure I trust my own hands that much - much better to have some sort of mechanical aid in my experience!
