This is where I grew up. So many memories. Originally opened by my great uncle, Gene Sims, the Sims Market and Deli was a true public forum. You could get the best biscuits and gravy, bologna sandwiches, burgers, and pinto beans you've ever tasted. Then, you could get a piece of Aunt Mary's legendary chocolate pie. They served local meat before it was cool. Most of the meat came from the butcher shop just behind the Deli that was owned by my friend, Alvin. In fact, a good portion of the employees and regulars either worked at the butcher shop or raised the animals that went in there. You were always guaranteed a good game of bottle cap checkers. Best of all, though, you could soak up the wisdom and wit of true old timers. In fact, I made it a point to do so almost every day when I would drive to high school. I may have smelled like grease and cigarette smoke, but it was worth it for the friends that I made and the things that I learned.
