American, 1836 - 1910. To me, the finest chronicler of the American experience in a period of transition from agricultural and pioneer days to the domination of this continent. Started out doing illustrations for Harpers Weekly during the War of Secession(aka Civil War), worked in oil as well as watercolor. Lived and painted in Boston, New York, Maine, Key West, Cuba, the Bahamas, Paris. This work, The Gulf Stream, is resident at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
