One of the best books I have read depicting the humanity and chivalry that (once) existed in war. One rarely gets to hear from the German perspective of things (go figure) and this book touches on our common desire to protect our homes, family, and country. Yes, the Nazis were evil but the one must remember most of these soldiers were conscripts, dragged to war by power hungry maniacs the like of Goring, Hitler, Himmler ect. Th German people suffered as much as the French, Poles, English, Hungarians, Yugoslavians, Austrians, Italians, and so on. It's a universal tragedy.
