This is a beautifully well thought out bench design. Simple but strong joints to keep it rigid in all directions, high-ish front and rear stretcher bars so you can get your feet under it and a sturdy jointed top. The top side stretchers should stand about 1/8" proud of the corner posts. This means the top should always sit flat on the stretchers even allowing for seasonal expansion or shrinkage of the posts. I wish I'd seen this design before I spent $70 on bench design books!
