Is it just me or did that article fail to address what it title promises - why? It talks a lot about how numbers are dropping and that leads to fewer teams and as a result less participation but what caused the drop? Is it the fact that sports stopped being something you do for fun and instead became hyper-competitive? Is it the push behind other sports like Soccer and Lacrosse?

There are so many choices compared to when I was a kid growing up in Canada in the 70's. Video games and the perceived "difficulty" of baseball are also getting in the way of increased or at least steady participation. When my son (who plays on two baseball teams this summer - one league, one travel) has free time, he and his friends are skateboarding. Kids just wanna play, and for some reason, parents now feel compelled to schedule every waking hour with activities and (ugh) "playdates".
