I think the sarcastic part was when Meredith wrote "CNN.com has become a news website that many people turn to for top-notch reporting." I don't think of CNN as "top-notch" in any way and I don't think of CNN.com, period.
But perhaps I got stuck there and missed the point.
It's all a spoof Jake. Meredith did not write the article, the folks at The onion did to make fun of CNN and how stupid they are. You are right, it is best not to think of any major news source as worthy of anything more than hype and propaganda.
OK, so getting stuck on the first couple of sentences did me in. It must have become apparent as the article went on. I had a tough time continuing after I threw up in my mouth, though.
